Promoting The Development Of Infant and Young Children with Spina Bifida and Hydrocepalus SITTING AND ROLLING

SITTING : The infant should be encouraged to sit as soon as he has gained some head control. If some head control has not been gained by three to four months this position should still be encouraged. Sitting will make it easier for him to develop an interest in his sorroundings.
When he first start to sit some suport may be necessary. You can use pillows to support the child or support him against a wall on in a box. As the child grows, special equipment may be necessary if he has a lot of leg paralysis and poor body control. See the section on "Equipment and Aids for Mobility".

ROLLING : Learning to roll is necessary for all infants. Infans with spina bifida may need to use rolling for movement as crawling may be difficult depending on the amount of muscle paralysis.
